Fred Watson Fred Watson says he spent so many years working in large telescope domes that he has started to look like one. He has been an astronomer at the Australian Astronomical Observatory since 1995, and his main scientific interest is in the use of novel technology to gather information on very large numbers of stars and galaxies. Until 2009, Fred was based at the AAO's telescopes in Coonabarabran, where he was Astronomer in Charge. He is now the Sydney-based Head of Lighting and Environment, working closely with state and local government and the Coonabarabran community to preserve the dark skies of the observatory. Fred has adjunct professorships at the University of Western Sydney, University of New South Wales, Macquarie University, the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Southern Queensland. Dr Vanessa Moss, also, a radio dish! Meet Dr. Vanessa Moss, She will be one of the contestants at STEMquiz on June 21, Wayward breweries, 6:30-8pm. I am an an astronomer based at the University of Sydney, working as part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics ( CAASTRO ). Rather than the light we see with our eyes, I use radio waves to study hydrogen fuel in galaxies billions of light years away as well as in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. I consider myself as a modern-day explorer of the universe. I love visualising data of all kinds, scheduling my work trips around basketball games, and working as a guide at Sydney Observatory with the hope of sharing my enthusiasm for astronomy and science with as many people as possible.
